Trip Description
The Bochnia Salt Mine is the oldest salt mine in Poland, a true pearl of Małopolska’s industrial heritage. On Saturday, November 15, 2025, we are taking you there on an extraordinary photographic expedition, unlike anything you’ve experienced before! Our exclusive trip to the Bochnia Salt Mine will reveal to you the corners of the fifth level – places normally inaccessible to tourists – and you will capture the magic of salt in the darkness and the glow of lamps. This is not an ordinary visit: it’s a Bochnia photo walk full of adventures and unique shots, which joins the list of Zrobotyzowani: Events 2025 as one of the most unique experiences.
Thanks to a unique collaboration with Kopalnia Soli Bochnia sp. z o.o., we have received this unparalleled opportunity to organize an authentic photo walk – with access to historic workings, engine rooms, underground railways, and salt chambers that remain closed to visitors on a daily basis. This is the result of mutual trust and a shared passion for discovering the heritage of technology and the beauty hidden beneath the earth’s surface.
Have you ever dreamed of descending 250 meters underground to see what a world bathed in the eternal darkness of salt looks like? What is it like to walk through corridors where the history of mining intertwines with the silence of the underworld? We invite you on an expedition during which you will find out that the Bochnia Salt Mine hides much more than a typical tourist route. As part of our event “Salt and Light,” we reveal to you the secrets of level V of the mine, organize photo sessions in amazing sceneries, and provide a wealth of experiences that will remain in your memory for a long time. Thanks to cooperation with the mine, we will gain exclusive access to underground places where ordinary tourists are not allowed.
- See places inaccessible on a daily basis: You will feel the thrill of an explorer on the fifth level of the mine – 250 meters underground, where usually only darkness and silence prevail, sometimes interrupted by the work of miners. We will go behind closed doors so you can look deep into the mining engine rooms and secret tunnels. This is a unique trip to the Bochnia Salt Mine, which will allow you to reach further than anyone else!
- Capture the magic of salt and light: Our photo walk is actually an unforgettable photo session in the mine. You will be able to take extraordinary photographs – from luminous salt chambers to old mining locomotives. The play of shadows and lights on the salt walls will create shots that cannot be replicated on the surface. Spread your photographic wings in a scenery straight from another world!
- Experience an adventure in great company: Spend the day among enthusiasts of history, technology, and photography. Together with Zrobotyzowani, we discover the secrets of the mine, share interesting facts, and learn from each other. We guarantee an unforgettable 8 hours underground – full of laughter, emotions, and satisfaction from overcoming new challenges. This is one of those unusual day trips that you will remember for years!
Photography is the art of captured light – in the Bochnia mine, light and salt create a perfect symbiosis. Don’t miss the chance to look at the underground world from the perspective of your lens and your own eyes at the same time. Allow yourself to participate in an event that will forever change your photographic portfolio and provide unforgettable experiences in one of the most extraordinary places in Poland. Join us and discover the glow of salt in the darkness of the mine! An authentic adventure awaits you, combining history, photography, and the thrill of exploration, which is everything that Małopolska’s industrial tourism has best to offer.

Trip Plan – Schedule
An adventure that will stay with you forever
During Salt and Light we have prepared a rich program full of unique attractions for you. You will discover the Bochnia Salt Mine in a way you won’t see it on any standard tourist route – you will literally go underground to enter places that are normally closed even to mine employees! We will also descend to the legendary fifth level “Lobkowicz”, where for eight hours you will explore salt labyrinths, historic engine rooms, and underground railway stations that have remained in the shadow of mining legends for centuries.
What exactly awaits you in the dark corridors of the Bochnia mine? Take a look:
- Descent into the depths of the earth: We will start with an exciting descent down the mining elevator shaft straight to level V of the mine. The journey down itself, as daylight disappears and raw salt appears around you, will give you goosebumps. This is the moment when the real adventure begins.
- Visiting the engine rooms: At the bottom, we will encounter the heart of the mine – we will visit underground engine rooms where you will see powerful devices and mechanisms formerly used for salt extraction. You will listen to stories about how these machines worked in the darkness, and you will feel the atmosphere of real mining. Shots full of steel ropes, flywheels, and historic devices will be within reach of your lenses!
- The mysterious fifth level: We will traverse the labyrinth of corridors of level V (Lobkowicz), discovering its secrets. This is where time has stood still – the walls bear the marks of pickaxes from centuries ago, and the air is filled with the scent of history. We will look into places that the ordinary tourist route does not reach. In the glow of our mining lamps, you will feel a thrill of excitement, treading where only a few have had the opportunity to be.
- Old railway workshop: We will visit an authentic underground railway workshop, where mining trains and wagons were once repaired. You will see the tools, spare parts, and perhaps a patina-covered locomotive waiting for its last run. This is the perfect place to take atmospheric photos – rust, grease, and salt create an extraordinary backdrop for your shots!
- Underground train ride: An original mining train ride awaits you, which will take us through a tunnel several hundred meters deep into the mine. You will sit in the wagons and feel almost like old miners going to work – with the difference that we are going on an adventure and with significantly more modern rolling stock! The wind in your hair (despite the helmet 😉), the clatter of wheels on the tracks, and the flashing lights of the lamps will create an unforgettable atmosphere. Cameras at the ready – such shots in motion are a treat for photographers!
- Presentation of a historic locomotive: On the route, we will encounter a historic mining locomotive, which guides will present in action especially for our group. You will hear the rumble of the electric motor echoing off the chamber walls and see how salt was once transported in wagons pulled by these steel horses. There will be time to get closer, take photos of details, and even touch this machine – it’s a living lesson in the history of technology underground.
- Corners just for us: During the photo walk, we will also look into parts of the mine that are not accessible on a daily basis. We will open a few closed doors and deviate from the beaten paths to discover raw, virgin spaces of the mine. You will feel the atmosphere of a place that is usually immersed in silence and darkness – just us, our lamps, and stories from centuries ago written in the salt walls. This exclusive tour of the Bochnia Salt Mine will allow you to see more and deeper than any standard tour offers.
- Tourist route “Salt Witness”: There will also be elements of the mine’s newest attraction. We will walk through fragments of the multimedia route “Salt Witness”, which brings the history of the Bochnia mine to life. In the Stanetti chamber complex, you will be amazed by a light show, and interactive exhibitions will allow you to feel like real miners from centuries ago. You will meet (in multimedia form) historical figures associated with Bochnia and see the oldest salt workings. This part of the expedition will add context to your photographs – you will understand how the mine has changed over 7 centuries, which you will capture in photos.
- Picnic in the Ważyn Chamber: During the intensive tour, there will be time for a well-deserved, albeit short, rest. We will go to the most famous underground chamber – Ważyn, a huge space 250 m below the earth’s surface. We will prepare a warm meal for you there in an atmospheric setting – you can sit at wooden tables, eat a tasty dinner, and talk about your impressions. Not everyone can say they’ve eaten dinner deep underground! A moment of relaxation among the salt walls will allow you to regain strength and at the same time continue to absorb the extraordinary atmosphere of this place.
What do you think? Such a program guarantees that you won’t be bored for a moment! You know what they say: Photography is the art of captured light, and in the Bochnia mine, light and salt create a perfect symbiosis.

What to Bring?
We want you to feel comfortable and safe underground. Here are our recommendations regarding equipment and clothing for the photo walk:
- Comfortable tourist clothing: Underground, there is a constant temperature of approx. 14°C and high humidity, so dress in layers. Long trousers and a layered top (e.g., t-shirt + fleece or light jacket) are best. Clothes may get dirty from salt or soil, so don’t wear anything you’d regret damaging.
- Mountain or trekking boots: Sturdy, ankle-high, with good grip – this is essential. The walkways in the mine can be slippery or uneven. Comfortable boots will ensure a sure footing and comfort throughout the 8-hour hike. Sneakers or city trainers will not suffice.
People wearing soft shoes will not be allowed to participate in the tour. - Small backpack: We recommend bringing only the most necessary items in a small backpack so as not to restrict movement. What to pack? A bottle of water, a small energy snack (bar, nuts – although we provide a warm meal, a little something during the tour might come in handy), possibly personal medication or a power bank. Remember – the lighter the luggage, the easier it will be for you to explore the underground.
- Photographic equipment: Don’t forget your camera! DSLR, mirrorless, or even a good smartphone – the choice is yours. Take your favorite lenses (a wide-angle lens will be useful in tight chambers, and a bright lens will allow you to make better use of the scarce light). An extra battery and memory card are a must-have – you will be taking lots of photos! You can bring a travel tripod (if you like taking photos with a tripod in darker places), but remember that it should be small enough or well-secured to your backpack so that it doesn’t interfere with walking.
- Helmet and flashlight: We will provide you with protective helmets and flashlights on site, but if you have your own flashlight and want to bring it – go ahead. An additional light source will make it easier for you to move around and allow you to illuminate photographic shots more interestingly in unlit corners. The organizers will also have spare flashlights, so don’t worry if you don’t have your own.
- Small items: A small personal first-aid kit (plaster for abrasions, painkiller – it’s always worth having), work or cycling gloves (if you prefer not to touch e.g. handrails or rocks with bare hands – it’s not mandatory, but some participants like to have gloves), wet wipes or a small towel (they will come in handy because salt dirties hands and equipment).
The better you prepare, the more enjoyable your adventure will be. On site, we will take care of safety equipment and guide supervision, but your comfort depends largely on appropriate clothing. Remember – there are no shops underground or the possibility of buying anything, so it’s better to have everything with you.

How to prepare for the expedition?
An underground photographic expedition in the Bochnia Salt Mine is not just a walk through historic corridors – it’s a physical adventure in a demanding, harsh environment. To fully enjoy the event and at the same time ensure your safety and comfort, proper preparation is very important. Here are our most important recommendations and rules:
1. Free hands are essential
While moving around the mine, it is necessary to have both hands free. For your own safety and convenience:
- A tripod (if you bring one) must be attached to your backpack – please do not carry it in your hand or in a case on a strap. A backpack with side straps or an external attachment system will be ideal.
- A camera should be worn on a strap or harness so that it does not restrict movement and does not occupy your hands during the march.
2. Mandatory equipment – safety first
For the duration of the event, each participant will receive necessary rescue and protective equipment from us, which must be worn at all times during the expedition:
- Helmet with a headlamp – mandatory at all times. The flashlight is powered by an external battery in a bag on a belt.
- Escape apparatus (rescue) – this is a small device for evacuation in smoky conditions. It must also be worn attached to the body (usually on a hip or chest strap). It cannot be put in a backpack or held loosely.
All these items will be issued on site and thoroughly discussed during the Health and Safety training. Their correct fitting and wearing is a condition for participation in further stages of the tour.
3. Clothing and equipment – comfort in all conditions
- Tourist clothing (that you won’t mind getting dirty) – comfortable, warm, and layered clothing that can get dirty with salt, dust, or grease. Long trousers, a sweatshirt, and a softshell jacket will work best.
- Trekking/mountain boots – with a non-slip sole and good ankle support. There may be wet or slippery sections on the route.
- Work or cycling gloves – recommended in places where you need to hold onto handrails, ladders, or lean against walls.
- Handheld or headlamp flashlight – although we provide our own lighting, it’s always worth having a backup light source.
- Power bank – there is no access to charging equipment underground. Make sure your camera batteries are charged, and a power bank will allow you to power e.g. your phone or an additional flashlight.
- Water and a small snack – we recommend at least 0.5 l of water and something energetic (bar, nuts). We provide the main meal, but with an 8-hour program, it’s worth having something “on the go”.
4. What to leave on the surface?
- Large backpacks, camera bags, equipment cases, or excess luggage – leave them on the surface or in cars. Everything you take, you carry with you for 8 hours underground. The less – the better.
- Any loose items that might fall out or interfere with walking should be left behind – safety and mobility are paramount.
- We do not provide storage for personal belongings underground – do not take what is unnecessary – however, if you are arriving by train – we will store your belongings upstairs 🙂
We want every participant of the expedition to feel confident and comfortable, while adhering to the safety rules applicable in an active mining facility. Thanks to good preparation, you will not only gain comfort but also more energy to enjoy exploration and photography.
Do you have questions about equipment or clothing? Write to us – we’ll be happy to advise!
Industry is waiting for you. Are you ready to discover it?

Information for Geeks
The oldest salt mine in Poland – an engineering phenomenon in Europe
The Bochnia Salt Mine, founded in 1248, is the oldest continuously operating salt enterprise in Europe. For centuries, not only was valuable raw material extracted here, but also innovative solutions in mining engineering, ventilation, underground transport, and technical safety were developed.
The structure of the mine currently includes:
- 26 exploitation levels, of which the lowest – August level VI – reaches a depth of 468 m.
- Our photo walk will take place, among others, on Lobkowicz level V, located approx. 250 m underground.
- The total length of the corridors in the Bochnia mine is over 300 km, of which only a small percentage is accessible to tourists.
🔧 Technical architecture and mining infrastructure
During the event, we will enter technical zones that fascinate with their complexity and raw beauty. Here are a few details worth knowing:
Shaft engine rooms:
- The mine has two active shafts with hoisting machines – “Campi” and “Sutoris”.
- You will see devices for lowering and raising transport cages, controlled from historic, yet modernized control panels.
- Mechanisms based on electric motors with rope gears with a load capacity of up to several tons.
Mining railway:
- A ride on a historic underground train with battery drive – vehicles move on narrow tracks with a width of 600 mm.
- The route includes rides between chambers, including a demonstration of an industrial locomotive in working conditions.
Safety and ventilation systems:
- The mine has independent KSRG (National Mining Rescue System) systems – we will present you with rescue equipment, charging stations for escape apparatus, masks, and communication systems.
- Air treatment and drying stations maintain a stable microclimate and remove moisture from deeper levels.
Own energy and water supply network:
- The mine has an internal energy infrastructure, as well as a system of pumps and channels for dewatering workings (brine water is transported to the surface and neutralized).
- Separate charging points for headlamps and technical equipment in dispatcher zones (e.g., “Charging station No. 5”).
📚 Historical tidbits and innovations
- Campi Shaft – the newest shaft from the 1970s, used for passenger and freight traffic, with a depth of over 212 m.
- Sutoris Shaft – a historic shaft active since the 13th century, for centuries it was the main point of extraction and vertical communication.
- Ważyn Chamber – the largest underground chamber in the mine, with dimensions of approx. 255 m long, 14 m wide, and 7 m high, currently adapted as a recreational and dining space.
💡 Technological curiosities
- Underground St. Kinga’s Chapel with a stage lighting system – the light installation was created for cultural events and multimedia shows.
- Microclimate monitoring system – temperature, humidity, and CO₂ sensors located in key points of the workings, with data transmission to the surface.
- Geotechnical monitoring – crack gauges, inclinometers, and devices for measuring rock subsidence installed in historic workings.
- Unique ventilation solutions – natural chimney drafts supported by the Trynitatis shaft – the so-called intake shaft, which we will use during the tour.
- Historic devices – on the route you will encounter, among others, old rope systems, remnants of wooden props, and manual winches – remnants of 18th and 19th-century exploitation.
🧭 The future of the Bochnia mine
Although commercial mining has ended, the Bochnia Salt Mine is developing as a model example of industrial revitalization, combining museum, tourist, and educational functions. Work is underway to expand the offer with:
- Underground microclimate and educational laboratories,
- New sections of the “Salt Witness” route with immersive narration,
- Expansion of the industrial railway exhibition on levels IV and V.
For enthusiasts of technology, industrial history, and underground engineering, this is a true training ground for knowledge and inspiration. Unique shots, rarely seen technical solutions, and authentic contact with a heritage that has been forged with pickaxes for over 750 years await you. Zrobotyzowani invite you to where the surface world ends – and the magic of salt and steel begins.
